Philip Chen has been Chairman of The Hong Kong Jockey Club since June 2020 and a Steward since 2006, during which time the Club has been transformed into a world-class racing organisation and one of the world’s top ten charity donors. Most recently this has included the donation of HK$1.8 billion to fight the pandemic in Hong Kong.
Philip is a Non-Executive Director of Hang Lung Properties Limited, and before his retirement in 2018 was Chief Executive Officer of Hang Lung Group Limited and Hang Lung Properties Limited. Prior to joining Hang Lung in 2010, he served thirty-three years with the Swire Group, including as Chairman of John Swire & Sons (China) Limited, Chief Executive of Cathay Pacific Airways Limited, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Dragon
Airlines, and Executive Director of Swire Pacific Limited and John Swire
& Sons (Hong Kong) Limited.
Over the years, Philip has taken up major business and community service roles. He has been actively involved in government policy making, education, universities, commerce, aviation, logistics, tourism, theme parks and charities. He is also well known for his change-management of four major companies - turning around Dragonair and Ocean Park, changing the business model of Cathay Pacific and transforming Hang Lung Properties.
Philip has a passion for education. For his Alma Mater, The University of Hong Kong, he is Professor of Practice in Management and Strategy and a Member of the International Advisory Council. He is Professor of Practice (Hospitality and Tourism Strategies) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Visiting Professor of the Faculty of Economics at Sophia University, Tokyo.
Philip has written seven bestseller travel books, two of which have been published in the Mainland and Taiwan. His research on the “Great Cities Theory” has been published as Great Cities of the World by the University of Hong Kong.
